Natus sum Vimuthi (Weymouth) in Dorsetia comitatu anglico die XVII Martii anno MCMXLIII.
Anno MCMLXII in Collegium Balliolense Universtatis Oxoniensis accessi ut scientiam musicam studerem. Anno MCMLXV consecutus sum Artium Bacchalaureatum, qui serius secundum consuetudinem vetustiorum meae patriae academiarum ad Magistratum promotus est, annoque MCMLXVI Diploma Educationis. Oxoniae in fidem orthodoxam et ecclesiam patriarchatus moscuensis receptus sum.
Ex anno MCMLXVII Holmiae in Suetia habitans primo adultos linguam anglicam docebam, deinde adolescentes in ludis publicis musicam praecipue Sollentunae, municipio Holmiae propinquo.
E quo genere nihil fere aures hominum attigit. Verba operae de Hippolyto Thesei filio diutius confeci quibus iam incepi tonos adiungere.
Complures sermones hodiernos Europae Occidentalis aliquantum tractare conor, praeter anglicum et sueticum imprimis francogallicum, germanicum, hispanum, lusitanum et gallaecam. Linguis etiam artificialibus interdum me oblectavi.
 Scripsi anno MCMXCIX.

Stephen Coombs, born 17 March 1943 in Weymouth, Dorset, England.
Matriculated Balliol College, Oxford University 1962. B.A. in Music 1965, (later according to custom commuted to M.A.), Diploma of Education (teaching qualification) 1966.
Converted to Orthodoxy (in the Moscow Patriarchate) while at Oxford.
Resident in Stockholm, Sweden, since 1967, teaching at first English to adults, later music in state schools, mostly in Sollentuna (a municipality a little to the north of Stockholm).
Have composed a large amount of music, some for school use, some intended to find new, more satisfactory musical territory beyond (i.e. not "this side of") Schoenbergian or Boulezian atonality. Of the latter sort very little has been performed. Have written the libretto (in English) and started on the music for an opera, "Hippolytus".
Began during the 80s to do research in early Christian liturgy, particularly the development of the eucharistic prayer. Took part in seminars etc. in Lund and Uppsala; two articles published in Ostkirchliche Studien, Würzburg, Germany. This led to a re-awakening of an interest in the Latin language which I had learnt at school.
Co-founded a "humanistic-Christian" private school (Katarinaskolan, St. Catherine's school) in Uppsala in 1994, where I now act as director of studies (deputy principal) and teach "Classical language tradition". This is a subject focussing mainly on Latin grammar and vocabulary. No other school in Sweden teaches Latin to pupils in this age-range (13-16).
I also try to keep up and improve my French, German and Spanish and (less successfully, I'm sorry to say) my Portuguese and Galician (i.e. Galego/Gallego). I am conversant with West European languages generally, have some knowledge of Church Slavonic through the Church and have been known to amuse myself with artificial languages (without taking them too seriously).

Lucem vidi Urbe Bonaerensi, A. D. 1953; ibidem habito. Mulier et tres filii mihi sunt; aliqua scribo; linguam Latinam, non bene, quotannis doceo multos discipulos (plus quam centum). Aliqui hoc vitae tempore peregrinantes me diligunt. Nulli molestus esse volo.

Johannes Lyaeus

Natus urbe Brisbanensi
quae in Terra Reginensi
caput est et gloria,
linguis classicis studebam,
nam in ludo tum vigebam
et in academia.

Posthac in Oxoniensi
collegio (Wadhamensi)
bibi philosophiam
Stagiritae et Platonis,
Rylei necnon Strawsonis,
Graecam et historiam.

E Collegio digressus
et in patriam regressus,
quaesivi pecuniam,
primum doctus, dein docens —
ut sophistes, sed haud nocens,
vendidi scientiam.

Hodie privatus homo
vivo commode in domo
epigrammata qui promo
in autumno lumine;
sunt Camenae forsan durae,
claudicant quoque caesurae,
sed hoc Flacci probo: "curae
minuentur carmine".

Born [in Australia] in Brisbane, the capital and glory of Queensland, I did well at school and university, studying Latin and Greek. Later at Wadham College, Oxford, I imbibed philosophy (reading Plato, Aristotle, Ryle, and Strawson) and Greek history. On leaving there and returning to my native land I sought means of support, first as a research student and then as a lecturer, selling knowledge like a sophist, albeit a harmless one. Nowadays I live agreeably at home in retirement, producing epigrams in autumn light. My Muse may be rough and my caesuras lame; however, like Horace [Odes IV.xi.35-6], I find in poetry the antidote for melancholy.
